The theme of this morning's post is Poor Planning.
1) Ben's otherwise illustrious graduate program just got a $4 million boost from Philip Morris, the same cigarette manufacturer that announced yesterday they were closing multiple plants and shedding over a thousand jobs. EdTrends head writer Meg says, "Positive youth development, which your grant money is supposed to fuel, starts when parents have reliable jobs and cigarettes are merely a historical curiosity."
2) Yesterday was National Cheesecake Day, and we were nowhere near Karen or the Cheesecake Factory, which was selling slices for half-price in-store AND proceeds for every slice of their newest flavor purchased went to an anti-hunger charitable organization. Mom, this is like the best thing ever for you. A) Cheesecake education and sampling. B) Charitable donations. C) The new flavor is: RED VELVET CHEESECAKE. It's a match made in heaven, even if we have to pay full price. Thank goodness I listen to the radio and learn about these things...
3) We're heading to West Virginia for a weekend fun-venture. Because ... it is August in Virginia, and the hot springs of Greenbrier County, WV, have been the "standard summer destination for wealthy Virginia low-country residents seeking reprieve from heat, humidity, and disease" (according to Wikipedia, at least). Albermarle County, please keep your H1N1 to yourself this weekend! Also, I think in WV we might seem like "wealthy Virginians." Win, win. We'll keep everyone posted about our trip to the Congressional nuclear-avoidance bunker and our time touring TJ's summer home, Poplar Forest. Luckily for everyone else, we've got Don's camera, which will surely make for better photo viewing post-trip.
4) Dave, who is home and recovering nicely, had his first shower this morning. Aren't you glad we're keeping you appraised, nation? ;-)
Happy weekend, all. Goodbye July, oh fabled month!

Ooooh! Ooooh! I know some "wealthy Virginians"! How cool is that?! I can't wait to hear about the bunker. Are you allowed to take pictures?
ReplyDeleteThat red velvet cheesecake looks delicious; I must get the recipe.
ReplyDeleteThink we'll stop for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory in Cherry Hill before our Jackson Browne concert tonight at the Sesquehanna Bank Center. Thanks for the tip.
