Finally! My predilection for blurry photography pays off, because I'm able to post a shot of our Saturday afternoon activity without violating some horrible law by exposing minors on the internet. Without further ado: we hung out in the sweaty Trenton Boy's & Girl's Club watching the Knicks get clobbered. They had moments of pure spirit, and we thought they could triumph, but the misnamed Celtics proved victorious. No reflection on the coaching, of course.
Afterward, despite defeat, we muscled over to BD & Fred's Annual SWAP for mulled wassail, GUACamole, and lots of laughter. (Say, What a Present!)
Sunday was wonderfully snowy and glittering.
After a morning of hard work (Ben on web design and the rest of us on hauling things from the basement and into dumpsters), we met MAshely and Sam-Sam at Sandy Hook for a cold beach trek.
That's Manhattan in the distance.
We also saw the oldest, continuously operated light house in America. Couldn't climb up because we visited out of season, but we did enjoy the abandoned military barracks and the ammunition proving grounds. Not pictured: Jersey-style pizza for dinner with lots of red seeds; truly awful stout-ice cream floats; HBO's coverage of the pre-inaugural concert; and the Big Love premiere. All in all, an awesome day.
With a packed car and bellies full of Aljon's, we shoved off Monday mid-day. To conclude what was obviously a snowy weekend, we drove south through plenty more precipitation. It was a-fallin' while we trekked across the Pennsylvania Turnpike (an awkward route which we hoped would keep us clear of inauguration traffic) and tapered off around West Virginia. This is filthy Koala at a Turkey Hill gas station near Lancaster, where we purchased mojito-flavored green tea (!!), old fashioned birch beer (duh! when in Rome), and some fuel while pondering butterscotch baked goods in shrink-wrap (thanks, TastyKake).
Later, at a rest stop in rural Virginia, I kicked the snow from the grill, and what had been covering the license plate came off in one piece with a complete impression of the number. Time to give that trooper a bath! He hit 130,000 somewhere near the Maryland border yesterday.
