Friday, before we rushed north, we walked the perimeter of the Tidal Basin ogling the cherry blossoms and hoping the rain, which poured down hard all morning, would hold out a few more hours.

It was a beautiful afternoon, with petals floating like snow and tourists happily mingling amidst the trees and pausing with reverence at the memorials.
