The Great 2008 (Faux) Painting Extravaganza has come to a close.
Many walls have been primed, plastered, and painted. The house is no longer covered in plastic, the air no longer gives headaches, and the drips of paint in the back yard are fading into the grass.

But the completion of the project also means no more early morning discussions of dancing the tango with Ori, and no more humming "Everybody Dance Now" in an Israeli accent up on a 14 foot ladder. No more lessons about Guatemalan coffee plantations and the differences between pesco and pescado with Edwin. The house is decidedly quieter today.
And Halloween is over, too. Not enough trick-or-treaters, but a few highlights: little girls who appreciated our Obama pumpkin and squealed "Yes we can!"; a tiny Buzz Lightyear with a bothered older sister in a cat costume, who dragged him along, and said, "Yes, he's a very annoying and SMALL Buzz Lightyear"; the girl from across the street dressed as the New York Times (much to Karen's disappointment that she wasn't the WSJ); two adults dressed as Superman and Superwoman, herding some fairies and cartoon characters in their wake along Madison Street.
Until next year, Halloween, when I hope everyone will be as excited to see you as I always am.

Wow! Forgive my complete comic book geekiness, but, if you had a trick-or-treater dressed as Superwoman, as distinct from Supergirl, you were amazingly blessed. Ben may recall the character of Kristin Wells, from the 28th Century, who played a central role in the novel Miracle Monday. She later assumed the identity of Superwoman. This is an astonishingly obscure character, maybe even more obscure than Halk Kar, so if she showed up at your door, you were visited by an absolute Queen Geek!
ReplyDeleteI may be wrong, Dave! Let me check in with Ben and John, who were with me on a walk through the neighborhood. There was certainly an adult couple featuring Superman and an accompanying dressed woman. I'll report back with verification; gotta be careful not to make any Superperson mistakes! ;-)
