Meg and I have been on the road for a little over a week now--we left Amherst, MA on the 31st of July after a nice goodbye lunch from Fresh Side with our buds Amanda and Caro. The good packed truck pictures are on the other computer, but you can imagine; it was a sweaty, cardboard affair.
We are a bit backlogged, so expect some nonlinear posting .Right now we have access to some photo files from our time in NJ on (not to mention the car repairs that we needed that kept us waylaid there for an extra day).
To sum up: we had a very heartwarming and rewarding stay at Meg's 'rents (despite the A/C being on the fritz). It was tough to say goodbye...plenty of tears and leave-delaying!

We headed down to Virginia yesterday to visit my parents before heading to points West. Much to our surprise, they had what we had thought was a hometown Jersey delight for us come dessert time: Rita's Water [Wooder--Ed.] Ice.

To the pleasure of Meg's dad, there is also a deadhead presence in Charlottesville (c'ville if you're in the know).

My parents' new place is palatial. It was reminiscent of the final section of 2001: A Space Odyssey with its classic decor and clean, quiet stillness.

My mom wasn't feeling well this morning, but my dad handled it like a real pro. He made his awesome guacamole and we devoured it con mucho gusto like ravenous dogs (los perros tienen hambre!).

We departed after watching old slides and listening to my "eight, eight, O eight!" composition in honor of the recently passed auspicious date.
We drove...and drove...into TN.

Meg challenged me to eating at a Cracker Barrel before long, and I raised her by insisting upon doing it at the next available opportunity. They actually had some decent vegetarian fare!

We pulled into Knoxville after driving a detour route whilst listening to some unexpectedly pleasant radio programming, alternately themed along the lines of "road music" and "Christian rock." We have been watching the Olympics and marveling at the athletic prowess... and composing music and playing Nintendo DS. Soon we shall hit the hay and head on to Memphis, the City of the Sun (in the land of the delta blues).

Glad to hear you're off to a good start. Road trips can be great fun. I hope you have some Twizzlers for the ride. I can't wait to hear your reaction to Memphis, home of the Blues and Elvis.
ReplyDeleteMy first blog post ... how exciting :)
ReplyDeleteLove the pictures included in the post. Sorry to hear about your car troubles ... hopefully it will be clear sailing for the rest of the trip.
Who won at checkers at Cracker Barrel, the ultimate food stop down south?
